COMMENTARY: Firstly, to explain my first-place pick, I really want Roger Deakins to get an Oscar and want to be optimistic going in. Secondly, I suppose predicting Son of Saul as a Best Cinematography nominee is a bit of a gutsy guess. However, I’ve heard rumblings that voters in that branch are considering it, and often strong foreign language contenders show up in categories like this. If it does appear here tomorrow morning, and it’s also nominated for Best Foreign Language film, consider it a lock to win the latter category.

And there are my predictions. As I finish, edit, and post this piece hours before the nominations themselves are revealed, I feel certain I my score will be somewhere between “mediocre” and “abysmal”. I’ll try to get a reaction piece up by week’s end.

The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards will be revealed in an announcement ceremony presented by film directors Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee, actor John Krasinski, and AMPAS president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. The event will take place at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, and will be broadcast both online and on TV.
