Is it an option not to be excited by the idea of a new Steven Spielberg movie starring Tom Hanks? This particular one, Bridge of Spies, is about the U-2 Incident, an event that occurred in May 1960, during the Cold War, in which an American spy aircraft was shot down and its pilot, Francis Gary Powers (1929 – 1977) was held by the Soviets. Hanks plays James B. Donovan (1916 – 1970), the lawyer tasked with the high-profile mission of representing the United States in bartering for Powers’ release.
The trailer looks great, and shows off Spielberg’s continuing collaboration with master cinematographer Janusz Kamiński. Besides Hanks, the cast includes Alan Alda, Amy Ryan, and Mark Rylance. Slated for an end-of-year release, the film looks poised with a desire to be a prestige historical thriller that will rack up both critical and audience attention. That can only happen, of course, if the movie is genuinely impressive, and if this exciting first preview is anything to go by, it just very may well be.
