As with many comedies, Spy looks like a movie that could go one of two ways. Trailers aren’t very helpful in determining whether or not a film like this will be funny or not, and often it’s a detriment, as many of a comedy’s best jokes are revealed before the movie is properly released. But still, Paul Feig’s new film looks to hold some promise from the get go, with a cast consisting of Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, Rose Byrne, and Allison Janney, among others.
There were some funny moments within for me. I liked the closing line, where McCarthy’s character, upon falling of a motor scooter, remarks “Who puts a roof on a scooter? What are you, the Pope?” If the film can create a steady blend of one-liners, physical comedy, and sequences where its cast is allowed to play off each other, then we could have a genuine hit on our hands. If this preview is a collection of Spy‘s best bits, and the final product is down hill from there — well…
Spy will be released in the U.S. on June 5, 2015.
