I suppose it’s no secret to regular readers of the site that I wasn’t exactly a fan of Divergent, the first entry in the film adaptation series of Veronica Roth’s trilogy, but I suppose anything’s worth a second chance, so I decided to check out the trailer for its sequel, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which was recently released online. I’m honestly not terribly sure what to make of the preview. It, of course, continues the story of Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley), and her quests throughout the futuristic Chicago she lives in, where societies are divided into strict factions based on a combination of an individual’s skill set and personal choice. Insurgent presumably follows Tris and her companions in the wake of thwarting an uprising from a faction leader (Kate Winslet), and will dig deeper into the intricacies of the society of which it is set.
The trailer seems standard, with snippets of dialogue interspersed with clips from numerous action scenes. It looks like Insurgent will contain a myriad of big setpieces, which, if the movie isn’t perfect, will still make it fun to look at. It seems that in trilogies, the second installment is the easiest to present, as there’s nothing big to set up and nothing big to wrap up. And even though this franchise, like many others, will continue the trend have its final installment bifurcated, let’s hope it can carry on the other trend and create a solid “middle” entry, improving the numerous flaws of its predecessor, and make the best possible use of its large, impressive cast and technical credits.
The Divergent Series: Insurgent will be released on March 20, 2015 in most countries. To catch up on the story, head over to Amazon and buy the book Insurgent here.
