The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 – Trailer Reaction/Review

And so we continue. The film adaptations of Suzanne Collins’ enormously popular series have so far been the subject of an upward trend for me. The Hunger Games was a film I felt was over-directed and didn’t correctly develop its characters, but its successor Catching Fire corrected most these problems and made a casual observer such as myself interested in where the series would go next.

This is a pretty well made trailer. It shows you the stars (a quite impeccable cast, from our leads to returning members, like Donald Sutherland and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, to new players, like Julianne Moore), sets up the basic direction that the film will follow, and gives you a few cool looking special effects shots, all without going too in depth and seemingly giving you the film for free. It teases, which is the point of a trailer. I’ll definitely be reviewing this one, whether in theaters or as soon as it’s released on home media. But here’s the thing — in a seemingly endless trend, the final book of a popular series is needlessly and greedily dragged out into two installments (supposedly to give a better fan experience, but really to maximize profitability). Can Mockingjay lend itself to two full length films without drowning the viewer in filler, which is an issue that usually effects most of these YA adaptations? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 hits theaters on November 21, 2014 in most countries. If you want to catch up before the film comes out, you can buy the book from Amazon here.
