Remember the Titans (Capsule Review)

by Ken B.

By 1971, T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA was officially de-segregated for the first full year. Herman Boone [1935 – present), portrayed here by DENZEL WASHINGTON is the first black coach of the team’s football team, the Titans. Of course, he must overcome racial and social boundaries while leading his team to the championships, and do so gracefully and peacefully. This film works in some ways. It’s well shot, decent performances, and spends half its budget on pop music that came out between ’65 and ’71. Walt Disney Pictures picked a surprisingly deep film here, and pulled it off with a live action version of the Disney touch.
